The Age of Innocence (1993, 139 Minutes)
Playing as a part of Scorsese: More Than a Gangster
This late 1800’s set period drama captures the repression and longing of the upper class during New York’s Gilded Age. Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a wealthy lawyer set to be engaged to the daughter of a prestigious family (Winona Ryder) when he falls in love with a mysterious countess (Michelle Pfeiffer) whose been ostracized by high society because of her divorce. He purses her, but the rules and customs of the time period threaten to keep them apart. Based off the beloved Pulitzer winning novel, The Age of Innocence feels like a perfect example of Scorsese’s ability to work over various genres; making this older world feel so claustrophobic and alive. Martin Scorsese once referred to it as the most violent film he ever made. Its unspoken tension and desire beneath the surface, is where this “violence” can best be understood.
