SENSE/MEMORY: FILMS OF PAUL SCHRADER
January 11 - 24, 2025 at the 4 Star
“I feel my life turning. All it needed was a direction. You drift from day to day, years go by. Then a change comes. I am able to change. I can be a good person. What a strange thing to happen, halfway through your life. What luck.”
“Now I see this clearly. My whole life is pointed in one direction. There never has been a choice for me.”
Through six decades, critic-turned-filmmaker Paul Schrader has walked a singular path between commercial and art house poles of American cinema. The selection of films that comprise this series focus on the through-line of characters floating between worlds: of predestination and self-determinism, of interior thought and external action, of those seeking balance and transformation. An iconoclast in the truest sense of the word, Schrader’s work grapples with these contradictions in its own imitable style, a persistence of vision that continues to push the bounds of narrative cinema.
