Raging Bull (New 4K Restoration, 1980, 129 Minutes)
Playing as a part of Scorsese: More Than a Gangster
Made in the aftermath of a near fatal cocaine overdose, Martin Scorsese went into Raging Bull thinking it might be his last film. What he and Paul Schrader put together is a towering story of American masculinity that’s still as palpable and engrossing as it was to audiences in 1980. It follows the life of Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro), a boxer filled with a deep rage and paranoia that will eventually isolate him from everyone, including his brother (Joe Pesci) and his second wife (Cathy Moriarty). But, whenever he’s in this ring, his life achieves a clarity and simplicity he can find nowhere else. De Niro won an Oscar for his primal, transformative performance in which he performs the physical and psychological destruction of a broken man over several decades. The film also marks Scorsese’s first film edited by Thelma Schoonmaker since his debut feature. Her visceral, kinetic representation of both the passage of time, and the violence of boxing, would also win her an Oscar and would mark the beginning of a long running collaboration that continues up to today with her work editing Killers of the Flower Moon.
Both screenings will be preceded by The Big Shave (1967, 6 Minutes), Scorsese’s early piece of experimental body horror involving a man trying to get a perfect shave.
